Rhode Island Italian Trivia

Rhode Island boasts the highest percentage of Italian-Americans (19%).

46.7% of Johnston residents are of Italian heritage -- the highest percentage of Italian Americans of any town in the USA.   Westerly is 34% Italian.

According to the Providence Journal, in the 2002 census, "For the first time in the state's history, more Rhode Islanders say their ancestry is Italian, rather than Irish."

Rhode Island is the only US state to be named by an Italian (Giovanni da Verrazzano).

Providence, like Rome, is built on seven hills and is often called "The Renaissance City" as is Florence.  WaterFire resembles being on the Grand Canal of Venice at night.

The rotunda of the State House has the fourth largest unsupported dome in the world; the largest is in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in Rome.

Rhode Island resident, Professor S.G. Scotti created the great-tasting, grape flavored Scot-Tussin in 1956. It was the first cough syrup to be devoid of sugar;  Dr. Scotti coined the phrase "sugar-free" in the 1950's.
